Is it better to burn wood or let it rot?
Chef's answer
Obviously, burning is much better for my wallet. From a strictly environmental standpoint, if your farm still has some woods, it might be best just to move the dead wood under the trees and let it rot. Dead wood has, um, gained a new lease on life, and is now celebrated as a vital engine of forest ecology.

Grain patterns can influence the way wood behaves as it adjusts moisture content. Wood that's cut from the heart of the tree is generally more stable against shrinking and warping. Very straight grain with only 1/32 in (about 0.79 mm) between grain lines is less likely to warp, regardless of wood species.
✔
Sand with the Grain Close inspection of a piece of wood reveals pores in the surface that form a pattern called the grain. Always sand in the direction of the grain--never perpendicular to it or at an angle. This also applies when working on edges and hard-to-reach corners..
